Artist Masanori Yamamoto - Vessels with rhythmic and dynamic "shinogi" patterns

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1987, Masanori Yamamoto grew up in an environment steeped in pottery tradition. After graduating from the Ceramic Arts Course, Department of Fine Arts, Faculty of Arts, Kyoto Seika University in 2009, he thoroughly mastered the fundamentals of pottery. Subsequently, in 2010, he completed the Smallware Lathe Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, gaining practical experience through employment at a ceramic manufacturing company.

Furthermore, in 2015, he completed the Clay and Glaze Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. He acquired deep knowledge and skills in glazes and clays, bringing even more originality to his works. Currently, he continues to create pottery in Shigaraki-cho, Shiga Prefecture, under the workshop name "Kozangama," inherited from his grandfather.

Masanori Yamamoto's works are characterized by "shinogi" patterns, meticulously hand-carved one by one.The "shinogi" patterns are rhythmic and dynamic, giving the vessels a rich expression. There are three series: one with diagonal "shinogi" patterns, another called "Nawame" (rope pattern) which features vertical lines with finely carved diagonal patterns in the remaining spaces, creating a warm, knitted-cable-like texture, and the "Hana-shinogi" (flower shinogi) series, which appears as華やかな花が咲いたように華やかです。
