Masayoshi Nakagawa

A Shigaraki Ware Artist Incorporating Original Playfulness
Masayoshi Nakagawa, a Shigaraki ware ceramic artist, was born in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture in 1970. After graduating from the Faculty of Commerce at Osaka Gakuin University, he worked for a kimono manufacturer in Kyoto, but his passion for craftsmanship led him to pursue a career in pottery. He completed the design course at the Shiga Prefectural Shigaraki Ceramic Research Institute in 1995 and the small-scale potter's wheel course in 1996, studying under Nobuo Furuya. In 2005, he established his independent studio in Shigaraki and continues his ceramic work to this day.
Masayoshi Nakagawa's works are characterized by the gap between their appearance and feel. His signature "Cork Series" has the texture of real cork, yet offers the unique weight and feel of ceramics.
Masayoshi Nakagawa runs his own studio and shop, "Plus Lago," in Shigaraki. "Plus Lago" is derived from "lago," meaning "lake" in Spanish, and is inspired by Lake Biwa, a symbol of Shiga Prefecture. The shop features not only Nakagawa's works but also handicrafts by other artists from Shiga Prefecture, showcasing the region's charm.
Masayoshi Nakagawa's works are characterized by their contemporary sensibility and playful designs, built upon traditional Shigaraki ware techniques. His unique worldview continues to captivate many people.
