Artist Masanori Yamamoto - Rhythmic and dynamic "Shinogi" pattern "vessel"
Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1987, Masanori Yamamoto grew up in an environment where the tradition of pottery was alive and well. He graduated from the Kyoto Seika University Faculty of Arts Department of Art and Design Ceramics Course in 2009, where he thoroughly learned the fundamentals of pottery. He then completed the small potter's wheel course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Technology Testing Center in 2010, and gained practical experience by working at a pottery manufacturer.
Furthermore, in 2015, he completed the base and glaze course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Technology Testing Center. He has acquired in-depth knowledge and techniques about glazes and bases, giving his works even more originality. He currently continues to make pottery in Shigaraki Town, Shiga Prefecture, under the trade name "Kozan Kiln," inherited from his grandfather.
Characteristics of Masanori Yamamoto's works
Masanori Yamamoto's work is characterized by the "Shinogi" pattern, which is carefully carved by hand one by one. The diagonal shinogi in particular is rhythmic and dynamic, giving the vessels a rich expression. He also works on the "Rope Eye" pattern, and the design, which combines vertical lines and fine diagonal carvings, has a warmth reminiscent of knitted rope.
A fusion of Shigaraki ware tradition and unique perfection
While inheriting the traditions of Shigaraki ware, Masanori Yamamoto creates a variety of tableware with his own unique sensibility. Representative works include rimmed plates, soup cups, curry plates, and teacups. His "tableware" with rhythmic and dynamic "shinogi" patterns is highly regarded for its practicality and beauty suitable for everyday use, and its design that enhances the food. He values the subtle expressions and textures that can only be achieved by hand, and focuses on providing tableware that is light and easy to handle.
