Who is Hakoya Tsuneyoshi?

Hakoya Tsunekichi was founded by Sasai Tsunekichi in Tosabori, Osaka, at the end of the Edo period (1845), and adopted the trade name "Hakotsune" in 1868 (the first year of the Meiji era). From the Edo to Showa periods, the company supplied cedar boxes to restaurants, confectionery shops, and sumo box seats, maintaining its quality amid the trend toward cheaper Chinese lumber. After going through a mass production system during the period of high economic growth, the company handled Chinese lumber during the Heisei period, but returned to solid Japanese cedar and launched its private brand, "Hakoya Tsunekichi," in 2018. Currently, the company handcrafts bento boxes and lunch boxes using unpainted, natural, solid wood such as Yoshino cedar. Based on the motto of "manufacturing that communicates with wood," the company is committed to creating sustainable lifestyles as a "guardian" of forests and hearts.
