Artist Hironobu Ishikawa - "Charcoal-grilled pottery" and "Rinka-zara" combine traditional techniques with modern aesthetics

Hironobu Ishikawa was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1981. From an early age, he was fond of drawing and making things, and had a strong desire to create things with his own hands. This passion became the driving force behind him to pursue a career in ceramics.

After graduating from a ceramics training school in Seto, Aichi Prefecture in 2004, he worked at Sowa Togei Hoshu Kiln in Toki, Gifu Prefecture, where he learned the fundamentals and applications of ceramics while honing his own unique techniques and sensibilities.

In 2008, he established his own studio in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, and became independent. Since then, he has been working in earnest as a ceramic artist. While respecting traditional techniques, he creates works that fit into modern life with his own unique sensibility. Ishikawa's "Carbonized Yakishime" series is one of his representative works, and is loved by many people as a masterpiece that brings out the charm of pottery to the fullest.

Characteristics of Hironobu Ishikawa's works

Hironobu Ishikawa's pottery style is characterized by a unique style that combines traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic sense. His works, particularly "Charcoal-fired" and "Rinka-zara" (Flower-shaped plates), are captivating to the viewers.

Carbonization and baking

Carbonized ware is a technique that does not use glaze, but places charcoal and the work in a pot called a sayabachi and bakes it at high temperatures. The colors of the fired pieces are diverse, ranging from pale beige and gray gradations to vivid black and white contrasts. There are no other pieces with the same pattern or color, making them one-of-a-kind. Created by a technique that draws out the power of nature to the fullest, these "tableware" take on a more refined expression the more you look at them. The more you use them, the more beautiful they become, and they can be used for a long time as an item that will fit into your lifestyle.

Flower Plate

Characterized by its soft texture and beautiful form, it can be used as a "tableware" for everyday use as well as for special occasions. The ring flower plate, which adds a touch of elegance to the dining table, is the culmination of Hironobu Ishikawa's high technique and aesthetic sense.

"Utsuwa" made using natural techniques that also allow you to enjoy the white space

Hironobu Ishikawa's pottery is characterized by its simple beauty and design that blends into everyday life. The more one looks at his "utsuwa" and "ringbana plates," the more tasteful their expressions become, captivating many people.

In addition, Hironobu Ishikawa said, He creates his works with the idea that "I want people to enjoy the white space of the vessels," and each carefully crafted vessel combines the practicality of an everyday tool with the presence of a beautiful objet d'art. As a result, they exude a special charm that makes you want to pick them up naturally in your daily life.
