Artist Hidenori Chono - Wooden trays that bring out the beauty of nature to the fullest

Hideki Chono was born in Kyoto in 1971 and is a woodworker who has been deeply fascinated by the world of woodworking and has honed his skills ever since.

In 2001, he enrolled in the Ishikawa Prefecture Turning Technique Training Institute to learn traditional turning techniques. During his four years at the institute, he thoroughly mastered woodworking techniques using the potter's wheel, building the foundation for creating delicate and sophisticated pieces.

After graduating from the training center in 2005, he established his own studio, "Studio Ibuki," in the mountains of Ishikawa Prefecture, where he began his full-fledged career as an artist, producing warm works that give the impression of the wood breathing.

In 2007, he held solo and group exhibitions around the country, and his works began to attract widespread attention. His unique style, which combines the natural texture of wood with precise turning techniques, continues to fascinate many people.

Since April 2009, he has moved his base of operations to Hiroshima, where he continues to create in this new environment. While preserving traditional techniques, Hidenori Chono continues to challenge himself to create woodwork pieces that fit into modern lifestyles. His works are all masterpieces that blend seamlessly into everyday life and enrich the hearts of those who use them.

A wooden tray made of thin wood with washi paper carefully pasted on it.

Another distinctive feature of Hidenori Chono's work is his washi-pasted pieces. These pieces are made by pasting washi paper onto thin wood and then coating it with lacquer. The surface has the texture of washi paper, which gives it a unique character not found in other wooden pieces, and it is also durable, lightweight, and very suitable for everyday use. The texture of washi paper creates a slightly chic atmosphere, unlike the glossy finish of lacquer, making it an excellent addition to your cooking.
