Artist Masayoshi Nakagawa - A Shigaraki ware artist who uniquely incorporates playfulness

Masayoshi Nakagawa, a Shigaraki ware potter, was born in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture in 1970. After graduating from Osaka Gakuin University with a degree in commerce, he worked for a kimono manufacturer in Kyoto, but decided to pursue pottery due to his passion for craftsmanship. He completed the Design Course at the Shiga Prefectural Shigaraki Ceramic Industrial Research Institute in 1995 and the Small Item Pottery Wheel Course in 1996, studying under Nobuo Furuya. In 2005, he became independent in Shigaraki and continues his ceramic work today.

Masayoshi Nakagawa's works are characterized by the gap between their appearance and feel. His representative "Cork Series" has the texture of real cork, yet offers the weight and feel unique to ceramics.

Masayoshi Nakagawa has his own studio and shop, "Plus Lago," in Shigaraki. "Plus Lago" is derived from "lago," meaning "lake" in Spanish, and evokes Lake Biwa, the symbol of Shiga Prefecture. In this shop, Nakagawa not only handles his own works but also handicrafts by other artists from Shiga Prefecture, promoting the charm of the region.

While based on traditional Shigaraki ware techniques, his designs feature a modern sensibility and playfulness. His unique worldview continues to captivate many people.
