Characteristics of Tomokazu Kawasumi's works

Tomokazu Kawasumi's pottery is characterized by the unique texture created by the warmth of Kasama clay and metallic glazes. Natural patterns emerge on the surface of his works through firing, displaying diverse expressions depending on the viewing angle and light.

He also has an appealing series with textures that don't seem to originate from earth. The "Rock Bark" series features rock and tree bark textures that emerge by carving the clay piece by piece and scorching it with a burner. The "Zebra" series, in black and white, evokes the image of a zebra. The world embedded in these series names is also unique to Tomokazu Kawasumi. The name is the concept. The concept is the worldview. Each piece embodies a philosophy.
