Artist Masanori Yamamoto - Rhythmic and dynamic "shinogi" patterned pottery

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1987, Masanori Yamamoto grew up in an environment steeped in pottery tradition. He graduated from Kyoto Seika University, Faculty of Art, Department of Fine Arts, Ceramics Course in 2009, where he thoroughly learned the basics of pottery. After that, in 2010, he completed the Small Wheel Pottery Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, gaining practical experience through working at a pottery manufacturer.

Furthermore, in 2015, he completed the Clay and Glaze Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. He acquired deep knowledge and skills regarding glazes and clay, giving his works further originality. He continues to create pottery in Shigaraki Town, Shiga Prefecture, under the trade name "Kozangama" inherited from his grandfather.

Characteristics of Masanori Yamamoto's works

Masanori Yamamoto's works are characterized by "shinogi" patterns, carefully carved one by one by hand. The "shinogi" patterns are rhythmic and dynamic, giving the pottery a rich expression. There are three types of series: a series with diagonal "shinogi" patterns, a "rope" pattern created by carving vertical lines and then finely carving diagonal lines into the remaining parts to create a warm, knitted rope-like texture, and the "hana-shinogi" series which appears as flamboyant as blooming flowers.

Masanori Yamamoto's pottery, crafted in the traditional kiln inherited from his grandfather, carries on the tradition of Shigaraki ware while also being created with Masanori Yamamoto's unique sensibility. He produces a variety of pottery such as rimmed plates, soup cups, curry plates, teacups, and mugs, and by arranging the "shinogi" patterns, he can give a festive impression to the dining table. Additionally, his pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe, combining practicality suitable for everyday use with beauty, and their food-enhancing design is highly praised. He focuses on valuing the subtle expressions and textures unique to handmade items and providing light and easy-to-handle pottery.
