Artist Masanori Yamamoto - Pottery with Rhythmic and Dynamic "Shinogi" Patterns

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1987, Masanori Yamamoto grew up surrounded by a rich tradition of pottery. After graduating from the Ceramic Arts Course in the Department of Fine Arts, Faculty of Arts, Kyoto Seika University in 2009, he built a strong foundation in pottery. In 2010, he completed the Small Wheel Throwing Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, gaining practical experience through work at a ceramic manufacturing company.

Furthermore, in 2015, he completed the Glaze and Clay Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. He acquired deep knowledge and skills in glazes and clays, adding further originality to his works. Currently, he continues to create pottery in Shigaraki-cho, Shiga Prefecture, under the workshop name "Kozangama," inherited from his grandfather.

Characteristics of Masanori Yamamoto's Work

Masanori Yamamoto's works are characterized by "shinogi" patterns meticulously carved by hand. The "shinogi" patterns are rhythmic and dynamic, giving the pottery a rich expression. There are three series: one with diagonal "shinogi" patterns, another called "Nawame" (rope pattern) where vertical lines are carved and the remaining areas are delicately carved diagonally to create a warm, knitted-cable-like texture, and the "Hana-shinogi" (flower shinogi) series, which appears as colorful as blooming flowers.

Masanori Yamamoto's Pottery, a Fusion of Shigaraki Ware Tradition and Unique Sensibility

Masanori Yamamoto creates pottery in the traditional kiln inherited from his grandfather, blending the tradition of Shigaraki ware with his unique sensibility. He produces various pottery pieces such as rim plates, soup cups, curry plates, teacups, and mugs. By coordinating a table setting with "shinogi" patterns, a vibrant impression can be added to the dining experience. Additionally, his pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe, combining practicality for everyday use with beauty, and are highly acclaimed for their designs that enhance food presentation. He focuses on preserving the subtle expressions and textures unique to handmade items, and on providing lightweight, easy-to-handle pottery.
