Artist Masanori Yamamoto - Utensils with rhythmic and dynamic *shinogi* patterns

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1987, Masanori Yamamoto grew up in an environment steeped in the tradition of pottery. He graduated from the Kyoto Seika University, Faculty of Art, Department of Sculpture, Ceramics Course in 2009, where he thoroughly learned the fundamentals of pottery. After that, in 2010, he completed the Small Potter's Wheel Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, gaining practical experience through working at a ceramics manufacturer.

Furthermore, in 2015, he completed the Glaze and Clay Course at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. He acquired deep knowledge and techniques regarding glazes and clay, giving his works even more originality. Currently, he continues to create pottery in Shigaraki Town, Shiga Prefecture, under the workshop name "Kozangama," inherited from his grandfather.

Characteristics of Masanori Yamamoto's Works

Masanori Yamamoto's works are characterized by hand-carved *shinogi* patterns, each meticulously crafted.The *shinogi* patterns are rhythmic and dynamic, giving the vessels rich expressions. There are three types of series: one with oblique *shinogi* patterns, another called "Nawame" (rope pattern) where vertical lines are carved and the remaining parts are intricately carved obliquely to create a warm texture resembling knitted cable, and the "Hana-shinogi" (flower *shinogi*) series, which appears華やか (gorgeous) like blooming flowers.

Masanori Yamamoto, who creates pottery in the traditional kiln inherited from his grandfather, carries on the tradition of Shigaraki ware while producing works with his unique sensibility. He creates various utensils such as rimmed plates, soup cups, curry plates, teacups, and mugs. By coordinating the dining table with "*shinogi*" patterned items, a gorgeous impression can be achieved. Furthermore, his works are microwave and dishwasher safe, combining practicality suitable for daily use with beauty. Their designs, which enhance food, are highly regarded. He focuses on preserving the subtle expressions and textures unique to handcrafted items and providing lightweight, easy-to-handle vessels.
