Beautiful vessels with patterns of earth and light created by the rhythm of carving

Nobuhiko Tanaka's "Jumping Plane Plate" was created using the "Jumping Plane" technique, in which the cutting edge is gently bounced on a rotating potter's wheel to carve a pattern.
The surface is covered with rhythmic arc-like carvings, which reflect light in a dancing manner depending on the angle from which you view it.

The amount of glaze applied and the texture of the clay vary from piece to piece, and the glaze that has accumulated in the carving marks creates natural shades, painting a landscape that is like a wave of sound.
Its appearance is light, yet it has a definite presence that can only be achieved through handwork.

When food or sweets are placed on the dish, the pattern of the dish resonates like a background, further enhancing the color of the ingredients.
The more you use it, the softer the clay's texture will become, and the light and shadow will shift gently.
This is a calm and rich piece that condenses Tanaka's "beauty born from carving."

Profile of Nobuhiko Tanaka

Born in Nerima, Tokyo in 1966, Tanaka graduated from Rikkyo University and studied at the Kyoto Prefectural Pottery Technical College. After working at Happugama in Shiga and teaching at a pottery class, he opened his own kiln in Iruma, Saitama in 1994. His signature works are "colored vessels" featuring overlapping shades of soft, gentle colors. The delicate gradations and soft, matte texture create a comfortable feel that makes you want to touch them. His vessels, which have also been used at the Danish restaurant "Noma," enhance the colors of the food while creating a soft atmosphere on the entire table. He currently runs a pottery class, "Tanaka Pottery Studio," in Iruma, where he shares the joy of making vessels while also deepening his own expression.
