A glazed tea cup that fits in the palm of your hand
Hironobu Ishikawa's "Carbonized Yakishime Tea Cup" is a beautiful small piece of pottery, with layers of black and ash created by slowly firing it in charcoal. Finished without glaze, only by the action of charcoal and flame, the surface naturally develops a scorched and metallic sheen due to the firing environment.
The size fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, and the smooth rim finish. When you turn it in your hand, the appearance changes depending on how the light hits it, giving it a sense of depth, as if it is breathing quietly.
Just pour a little tea or sake into it, and the color of the liquid is reflected on the carbonized surface, creating a gentle drift of time. Though it is a small vessel, it embodies the power of earth and fire, as well as a gentle warmth.
