Artist Hidenori Chono - Wooden trays that maximize the beauty of nature

Chono Hideki was born in Kyoto in 1971 and is a woodworker who has been deeply fascinated by the world of woodworking and has honed his skills.

In 2001, he enrolled in the Ishikawa Prefecture Turning Technique Training Institute to learn traditional turning techniques. Over the course of four years at the institute, he thoroughly mastered woodworking techniques using the potter's wheel, building the foundation for creating delicate and sophisticated works.

After graduating from the training center in 2005, he established his own studio, "Ibuki Studio," in the mountains of Ishikawa Prefecture, where he began his full-fledged artistic career, producing warm works that allow one to feel the breath of wood.

In 2007, he held solo and group exhibitions around the country, and his works began to attract widespread attention. His unique style, which combines the natural texture of wood with precise turning techniques, continues to fascinate many people.

Since April 2009, he has moved his base of operations to Hiroshima, where he continues to create in this new environment. While preserving traditional techniques, Hidenori Chono continues to challenge himself by creating woodwork pieces that fit into modern lifestyles. His works are all masterpieces that blend seamlessly into everyday life and enrich the hearts of those who use them.

Characteristics of Hidenori Chono's works

Hidenori Chono is particular about bringing out the natural beauty of wood to the fullest. His pieces, made from carefully selected wood, highlight the beauty of the wood grain, and the application of lacquer creates a unique golden, shining texture. His designs are simple yet sophisticated, and convey the beauty and majesty of nature.

Furthermore, Hidenori Chono's works are not only beautiful but also highly practical. His wooden and lacquer trays are lightweight, easy to handle, durable, and suitable for everyday use, and have attracted many fans.

While lacquering work is typically divided into different parts, Hidenori Chono does it all by himself. His pieces are made by cutting and carving the wood and repeatedly applying lacquer. By using the tool while imagining the process of creating a beautiful piece, you will feel even more confident and appreciate the piece you pick up.

A wooden tray made of thin wood with washi paper carefully pasted on it.

Another distinctive feature of Hidenori Chono's work is his washi-paste pieces. These pieces are made by pasting washi paper onto thin wood and then coating it with lacquer. The surface has the texture of washi paper, giving it a character not found in other wooden pieces, and it is also durable, lightweight, and extremely suitable for everyday use. The texture of the washi paper creates a slightly chic atmosphere, unlike the glossy finish of lacquer, making it an excellent complement to enhance your food. Having just one or two pieces in your home will enrich your life.

This is a superb product that is often used by restaurant owners.

Hidenori Chono's wooden works are a part of everyday life, yet they also offer special moments to their users. Please take a look at these works, which give you a sense of the connection between nature and people.

*As these are handmade, there may be individual differences in color and shape. Please enjoy the unique texture that can only be achieved through handcrafting.
