Light and color blend together in this masterpiece by Nobuhiko Tanaka

Nobuhiko Tanaka's "Colored Utsuwa Yunomi (Kumidashi)" is an impressive piece with vibrant yet somehow deep colors. By layering multiple glazes and making use of the accidental overlaps that occur during firing, he creates a rich expression that seems to emit light from within.

Although the shape may appear simple at first glance, the flow of the glaze and the color of each piece are unique, making it seem as if a natural landscape has been captured.
When hot water is poured into the vessel, the color of the surface becomes slightly transparent, and light spreads inside the vessel.
When you hold it in your palm, the soft warmth of the clay and the smoothness of the glaze blend together comfortably, and the more you use it, the deeper its appearance becomes.

This series has been adopted by the world-famous restaurant Noma and has been highly praised as a work that demonstrates a new relationship between food and tableware.
Not only does it enhance the food, but the tableware itself exists as a part of the scenery.
This piece embodies the quiet yet powerful beauty that is unique to Tanaka Nobuhiko, who freely manipulates "color" and "light."

Profile of Nobuhiko Tanaka

Born in Nerima, Tokyo in 1966, Tanaka graduated from Rikkyo University and studied at the Kyoto Prefectural Pottery Technical College. After working at Happugama in Shiga and teaching at a pottery class, he opened his own kiln in Iruma, Saitama in 1994. His signature works are "colored vessels" featuring overlapping shades of soft, gentle colors. The delicate gradations and soft, matte texture create a comfortable feel that makes you want to touch them. His vessels, which have also been used at the Danish restaurant "Noma," enhance the colors of the food while creating a soft atmosphere on the entire table. He currently runs a pottery class, "Tanaka Pottery Studio," in Iruma, where he shares the joy of making vessels while also deepening his own expression.
