A glass vessel of light and life born from the depths of a lake

Kaminaga Akemi's "Lake Biwa Color Water Basin" is a one-of-a-kind vase that captures the color of Lake Biwa, an ancient lake that has stood the test of time, within glass.

Lake Biwa is one of the world's most ancient lakes, with a history of over 4 million years. Kaminaga has captured the life energy generated by the mud that accumulates at the bottom of the lake, the water teeming with life, and the swaying of the aquatic plants in glass.

The ash used in this vessel is made from burned aquatic plants from Lake Biwa. By dissolving the ash from the aquatic plants, a unique color is created that is both soft and deep, evoking the feeling of sunlight shining on the surface of the lake and the presence of life floating at the bottom.

The wide, flat, dish-like form has the presence that only glass can have, without feeling oppressive, and is recommended not only as a water basin for flowers, but also as a container for serving fruit, accessories, or perfume bottles. Simply placing it in the center of a table is a beautiful vessel that gives a sense of balance between stillness and movement, and calms the entire space.

A glass vessel of light and life that reflects the light of Lake Biwa

Kaminaga Akemi is a glass artist based in Shiga Prefecture. Using the technique of glassblowing, she creates pieces that subtly blend into everyday life while still exuding a strong presence.

In particular, in his signature series, "Lake Biwa Colors," he established a unique technique of fusing Lake Biwa waterweed ash with glass, creating works that are not just about color but also encompass "the time of the lake, the cycle of nature, and the workings of life."

All of Kaminaga's pottery is one-of-a-kind. While cherishing the transparency of glass, the play of light and shadow, and the variability of form, his works are also highly practical, bringing the beauty of nature and quiet emotion into everyday life. His pottery continues to captivate the hearts of many people as "pottery that exists with nature."
