Artist Koichi Furuya - A work that combines the tradition of Shigaraki ware with a modern sensibility

Hirokazu Furuya is a ceramic artist from Shigaraki, Koka, Shiga Prefecture, and plays an active role as a central figure at Furuya Seitosho. Born in Shigaraki in 1979, he graduated from Bukkyo University and studied ceramics at the Shigaraki Ceramic Technology Testing Center Glaze Department and the Kyoto Prefectural Pottery Technical College Molding Department. He then returned to his family business, Furuya Seitosho, and continues to work as a ceramic artist.

Furuya Seito was founded in 1970 by Nobuo Furuya. Currently, under the direction of Koichi Furuya, all tableware for daily use is handcrafted. With the theme of "fitting into daily life," the pottery is produced with shapes that change little by little to suit lifestyles such as food culture and living spaces.

On the other hand, Koichi Furuya's personal works are appealing in that they pursue design and functionality that suits modern lifestyles while inheriting traditional techniques. In particular, his white tableware made using the Kohiki technique is loved by many people for its warm texture and ease of use. In addition, his works are characterized by careful handcrafting and simple yet sophisticated designs, enriching the daily dining table.

Characteristics of Koichi Furuya's works

Furuya's work is characterized by its soft texture, which is created by pouring white mud over a unique blend of red clay with a high iron content, and then firing it twice at a low temperature. This technique creates a simple, warm white color that gently envelops any food. In addition, the design is simple yet striking, with decorations such as line engravings and iron sprinkles.

Koichi Furuya's works are popular with many people because of their designs that blend tradition and modernity and the warmth that can only be achieved through handcrafting.

There is no doubt that Koichi Furuya's tableware will add color to your everyday dining table.

*Because these are handmade, there may be individual differences in color and shape. Please enjoy the unique texture of handmade items.
